You know you have reached an understanding with the local cockroaches when....
I am putting cookie dough onto a baking sheet while watching a cockroach drink water
from a tiny puddle next to me on the counter.
I open the hot oven to bake my cookies, and a dozen cockroaches fall out of the oven door and into the bottom of the oven...still alive despite the 350 degree heat!
(my cookies are still safe to eat...)

Wow Tiff... sad day... sounds kinda like trying to cook in the kitchen deals (shoot.. what were those called??) on the floors a couple below ours on the ship!!
